Property Tax ASSISTANCE Programs
- Homestead - Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund Program
A resident individual who occupied a homestead in Maine for the entire calendar year may be eligible for property tax relief for rent paid or property taxes assessed. For rent paid or property taxes assessed in any year, a single-member elderly household may also be eligible. Download a form here. - Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund “Circuit Breaker” Program Eligible Maine residents can receive a partial refund of property taxes assessed and/or rent paid during any year on their primary residence. The program runs between August 1, 2007 and June 2, 2008. (Note: The program to apply for refunds of property tax assessed and/or rent paid during the previous year begins August 1st.) - Veterans Exemption
A veteran who served during a recognized war period and is 62 years or older; or, is receiving 100% disability as a Veteran; or, became 100% disabled while serving, is eligible for $6,000. If you are having trouble paying your mortgage, most financial institutions now have a hardship provision which allows you to only pay interest for a short time. Ask your bank or credit union if they have this provision.
Maine State Housing Assistance Programs
- Maine State Housing Authority’s (MSHA) Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (commonly called LIHEAP or HEAP)
This program provides money to help low-income homeowners and renters pay for heating costs. Visit website for more information. - MSHA’s Low Income Assistance Programs (LIAP)
This program helps low-income homeowners and renters with their electric utility bills. MSHA, through Community Action Program agencies, accepts customer applications for LIAP as part of the LIHEAP application process. Visit website for more information. - MSHA’s Weatherization Program and Central Heating Improvement Program (CHIP)
This program provides grants to low-income homeowners and renters to improve home energy efficiency and perform energy-related repairs. Visit website for more information. - MSHA’s Appliance Replacement Program
This program is designed to help low-income households reduce their energy costs through replacement of older refrigerators and other home appliances that are inefficient and expensive to operate, and through consumer education. Visit website for more information. - MSHA’s Home Improvement and Repair Assistance MaineHousing offers programs to help with your home improvement and repair needs. The Home Repair Program provides no cost or low cost loans to repair or replace failed wells or septic systems, make heating, electrical, or structural repairs, and improve home accessibility. MaineHousing also offers programs to make your home lead safe, or fund repairs if your home has been damaged in a declared natural disaster. Visit website for more information.
