October 16th Update
Friday, October 16th, 2009I hope that you all are enjoying your fall. The leaves are beautiful this year!
I have had a busy month. The legislation I put in to clarify the Freedom of Access Right to Know law was let in for the short session yesterday. I feel very lucky to get it in. The Legislative Council only lets in a small percentage of bills for the short session. The goal of my bill is to make it illegal for public officials to make decisions or take actions over the phone, via e-mail or without the knowledge of the public. My bill will go in front of the Judiciary Committee next year for a public hearing and work session. The committee will then vote on the bill. They can vote ought to pass or ought not to pass. If they vote ought to pass, it will go to the House and then the Senate, three consecutive times for votes. If all goes well it will be voted in as law.
Weatherization help
MaineHousing’s Weatherization Program and Central Heating Improvement Program (CHIP) provide grants to low-income homeowners and renters to reduce energy costs by improving home energy efficiency.
Weatherization improvements may include insulation, weatherstripping, caulking, and some safety-related repairs. CHIP grants may be used to repair or replace central heating systems.
Mainers who receive LIHEAP assistance are automatically considered for the Weatherization and CHIP Programs, too.

Home energy audits
Maine has some of the oldest housing stock in the country and as a result, many homes are energy drains for their occupants.
Several colleagues have had certified energy audits performed on their home with great results. Energy auditors are home inspectors who evaluate your home to identify areas where energy efficiency improvements can save you money. Certified energy auditors have taken a technical course and passed an associated exam.
